Stem Cell Transplant

Hematepoietic and Other Kinds of Stem Cell Transplant

HSCT or Hematepoietic Stem Cell Transplant is the transfer or infusion of blood stem cells from the bone marrow (a stem cell transplant of this kind is usually known as a stem cell transplant) Stem cell transplant is a procedure that has something to do with the fields of hematology or blood and oncology. A stem cell transplant is commonly performed on people who have diseases concerning blood, the bone marrow or certain cancers.

Because of Hematepoietic stem cell transplants, the medical procedure is now more commonly performed with the use of stem cells that are gotten through peripheral blood rather than as we commonly know— from bone marrows. The process is done because it provides a much bigger graft (or part that can be taken) and does not necessarily need the donor or the outside participant to be injected with anesthesia. Although of course, with all these findings, and all the pros of it, a Hematepoietic stem cell transplant is still quite as dangerous as other types of stem cell transplants. (Not quite really “dangerous” as it has risks involved. But what thing in life does not involve risks if it allows for the possibility of a longer life?)

The pioneers of stem cell transplant were cancer researchers who started studying stem cell transplant through the transfer or transfusion of the bone marrow. These are Fred Hutchinson and E. Donall Thomas, who was later awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In this research, they showed that bone marrow cells transfused could “refill” the bone marrow and create new blood cells themselves. Their work also possibly halved the risks of getting an after effect wherein the hosts’ cells do not quite agree with the grafted cells. It is termed a “graft-versus-host disease” in the medical world which would say quite a lot about what happens in this type of complication.
